“Kristen is someone students can lean on as they navigate the challenges of becoming an adult.”
Kristen Wawro, English Teacher, Sciotoville Community School
The following story was shared by Sciotoville Community School in selecting Kristen Wawro as a 2016 Celebrate Teaching Distinguished Educator.
Kristen Wawro has been teaching at Sciotoville Community School (East Junior/Senior High School) for the past 10 years. She is a graduate of Cedarville College and spent several years teaching overseas in China, Indonesia, and Switzerland. Kristen has served on our school and district leadership teams. She has also presented at the state and national High Schools That Work Conferences.
Kristen seeks to get students excited about reading through organizing book fairs and her independent reading program in her classroom. Annually, she organizes and heads our spelling bee. She is also the coach of the Power of the Pen creative writing team, of which some members have placed in district and regional competitions. She attends extra-curricular activities, such as musicals and sporting events. For the last several year, Kristen has kept the score book for junior high basketball games.
Students know Kristen cares about them, because she supports them in all their activities in and out of school. Building relationships with her students lets them know she cares about them as a person. Many students face hardship during the junior high years. Kristen desires to be a help to them: a smiling face, a listening ear, and simply someone they can lean on as they navigate the challenges of becoming an adult.
