“Doug inspires both the staff and students at JGHS with his energy, passion, and dedication.”
Doug Joy, High School Teacher (Biology, Ecology, Robotics, and Zoology), East Muskingum Local School District
The following story was shared by East Muskingum Local School District in selecting Doug Joy as a 2017 Celebrate Teaching Distinguished Educator
Doug is a veteran teacher and coach at John Glenn High School (JGHS), who goes above and beyond to create meaningful and memorable learning experiences for our students every day. He has tremendous rapport and demonstrates genuine efficacy for all of his students and athletes.
Recently, he planned and carried out our Second Annual John Glenn Science Day for East Muskingum students in grades 3-12. Hundreds of students completed projects and presented them for review for more than 20 community judges, contacted and scheduled by Mr. Joy. There were also more than a dozen local science-related businesses that provided a real-world career experience. He also agreed to begin teaching our Robotics program last year and has more than doubled the number of students and competition teams.
As head coach of the Girls and Boys Track and Field teams, Doug has built a huge John Glenn Invitational with more than 25 schools and hundreds of athletes involved in a consistently well-run event that is the highlight of some athlete's and school's seasons. He organizes and leads an out-of-state track trip each spring that includes several local historical sightseeing opportunities for our students. I describe these accomplishments first because they are not part of his normal teaching or coaching responsibilities. These events are the product of Mr. Joy's dedication to the student-athletes at JGHS.
In addition, Doug’s classroom instruction inspires students to learn about and care for their local environment. His passion for teaching and learning is clearly evident based on the number of his students that continue their education in a science-related field. Mr. Joy is one of those faculty members that every school needs and is willing to initiate programs that enhance the learning experience for students and build connections to their community and futures. Mr. Joy inspires both the staff and students at JGHS with his energy, passion and dedication.
